First, the distinction everything depends on.
UK law treats the two kinds of asbestos completely differently. Thirty seconds here saves you an illegal — and dangerous — mistake.
Cement-bonded — we handle this
Rigid grey sheets where fibres are locked into cement: corrugated garage and shed roofs, wall panels, soffits, guttering, flue pipes, water tanks. Mostly installed 1950s–1980s. Around 10–15% chrysotile (white asbestos) — low-risk while intact, hazardous only when broken, drilled or smashed.

Fibrous / loose — licensed removal only
Pipe lagging, sprayed coatings, loose-fill insulation, insulation board (AIB). Crumbly, friable, releases needle-like fibres easily. This is the dangerous kind — and the law is absolute about it.

Damp the sheets down
A light spray of water keeps fibres settled while you work. Never sweep dry debris.

Wrap once in heavy polythene
1000-gauge sheeting, folded around the boards, every seam taped shut.

Wrap again, seal again
Second layer, taped sealed — ideally with asbestos warning tape. Double-bagged rubble sacks work for small pieces.

Stack for easy access
Ground level, reachable by our team. Tell us in the booking where it is and we bring the right vehicle.
No materials? Add the double-wrap kit in the order form and we’ll drop polythene and tape off before collection day.

The consignment note is your legal protection. We fill it in.
Asbestos is hazardous waste — it must travel with a hazardous waste consignment note, not a standard transfer note. Yours records who carried it and which licensed facility received it, and you keep your copy for three years. Every Ford Waste asbestos job includes this paperwork, completed on your behalf.

How do I know if it’s asbestos?
Age is the best clue: corrugated cement roofs, soffits and flues fitted before 2000 (most commonly 1950s–1980s) very often contain it. For certainty a WAC test or sampling kit confirms it — or send us clear photos and we’ll give you an honest steer for free. Never break a piece off to inspect it.
Is my asbestos garage roof dangerous right now?
In good, undamaged condition — generally no. Bonded asbestos becomes hazardous when broken, sawn, drilled or weathered to the point of crumbling. That’s why removal (carefully, wet, unbroken) is safer than years of slow deterioration.
Can I really remove it myself?
Cement-bonded from your own home: yes, lawfully, following HSE guidance — FFP3 mask, disposable overalls, damp the sheets, unbolt rather than break, never power tools. Fibrous or loose material: absolutely not; that is licensed-contractor work.
What does disposal cost?
It depends on quantity, access and whether it’s already wrapped — which is why collections are quoted (within one working hour) rather than guessed. A dedicated asbestos skip has a fixed online price. Beware quotes below the real gate fee: cheap asbestos disposal usually means fly-tipping with your name in the pile.
Why are you allowed when most firms aren’t?
We hold the licences and run our own asbestos transfer station — planning permission and EA permits most operators in the area don’t have. That’s why we’re one of only two businesses licensed to handle asbestos around here, and why councils use us for asbestos fly-tip clearance.
